ATHENS: Seventeen migrants have been found dead after their boat capsized while attempting to cross the Mediterranean near Greece.
The Greek Coast Guard reported that the incident occurred close to the island of Crete. Two people survived and were taken to hospital in critical condition.
According to the survivors, rough weather damaged the boat, and they had no food or water during the journey. Local media said the incident occurred two days earlier, but the migrants received no immediate assistance.
Greek authorities said the boat sank about 26 nautical miles southwest of Crete. A Turkish cargo vessel first spotted the vessel and alerted Greek officials.
