KHAIRPUR: The 26th death anniversary of the eminent poet, intellectual, and researcher Dr Tanveer Abbasi was observed at the Sindh Children’s Academy in Khairpur, drawing writers, academics, and cultural figures from across the region.

The ceremony was attended by writer Ayaz Gul, Deputy Commissioner Khairpur Fayyaz Hussain Rahojo, Shah Abdul Latif University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Yousuf Khushk, renowned broadcaster Inayat Baloch, and literary figures including Akhtar Dargahi, Mukhtiar Malik, and Qurban Mangi.

Addressing the gathering, poet Ayaz Gul described Dr Abbasi as a multifaceted personality. “He was a great human being and an exceptional poet, qualities that are rarely found together,” he said. Gul highlighted Abbasi’s contributions to literature, research, and essays, noting that the recognition he received during his lifetime was insufficient for the magnitude of his work. “Dr Tanveer Abbasi created an entire institution through his literary and intellectual efforts,” he added.

Dr Abbasi was credited with establishing key institutions such as the Sachal Chair, the Sachal Yadgar Committee, Radio Pakistan’s literary initiatives, and the Sachal Academy. Gul described him as a history-making figure whose influence shaped generations of Sindhi literary thought.

Deputy Commissioner Fayyaz Hussain Rahojo praised Dr Abbasi as a towering figure in academic literature. “Even after 26 years, his poetry continues to resonate with people, reflecting the enduring value of his contributions,” he said.

Professor Dr Muhammad Yousuf Khushk said that following Pakistan’s independence in 1947, Dr Abbasi established himself as a poet, researcher, and pioneer of Sachal studies. He noted that Abbasi had organised major literary conferences throughout his life and had combined his professional qualifications with a deep commitment to literature, personally guiding many students, including himself during his PhD.
