KARACHI: Pakistan’s burgeoning animation industry achieves a historic milestone as “The Glassworker,” the country’s first hand-crafted animated movie, earns a coveted spot in the official competition lineup of the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2024.

In a groundbreaking achievement for Pakistan’s animation landscape, “The Glassworker” has been selected to compete at the esteemed Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2024, marking the first time a film from the subcontinent has received such recognition. The movie will be showcased alongside illustrious Hollywood and Japanese animated features, solidifying its place on the global stage.

Scheduled for its world premiere at the Annecy festival in June 2024, “The Glassworker” joins a stellar lineup of international contenders, including “Sultana’s Dream” (Spain), “Gill South” (Korea), “The Missing” (Philippines), and others. The film’s inclusion in the competition underscores the rising prominence of Pakistani cinema and the growing recognition of its creative talents worldwide.

Produced by Mano Animation Studios and presented by GEO Films, “The Glassworker” represents a milestone in Pakistan’s cinematic landscape. Director Usman Riaz, reflecting on the journey to bring the film to fruition, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to premiere the movie at Annecy, emphasizing the significance of perseverance in overcoming challenges.

Khizer Riaz, the film’s producer, echoed Usman Riaz’s sentiments, emphasizing the honor of being selected for Annecy and the studio’s commitment to storytelling. With a vision to showcase South Asian narratives through animation, Mano Animation Studios aims to carve a niche in the global animation industry, bridging cultural divides and amplifying diverse voices.

Founded by Usman Riaz, Mariam Paracha, and Khizer Riaz, Mano Animation Studios represents Pakistan’s first foray into hand-drawn animation. With offices in Karachi and Los Angeles, the studio seeks to redefine storytelling in the region and beyond, championing original narratives and fostering creative innovation.

‘The Glassworker’ stands as a testament to Pakistan’s emerging animation industry, symbolizing the country’s creative potential and cultural richness. As the film makes its mark on the international stage at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, it paves the way for future generations of animators and storytellers, reaffirming Pakistan’s position as a vibrant hub of artistic expression.
