PPP Secretary General Nayyar Bukhari’s statement also underscored the PPP’s willingness to support the government in Parliament, provided there is a meaningful dialogue between the parties

ISLAMABAD: In a significant political development, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has formally called for the dissolution of the National Assembly and the initiation of new elections, citing escalating political tensions and the current government’s perceived instability. This call, made by PPP Secretary General Nayyar Hussain Bukhari, reflects a growing sense of urgency within the party regarding the country’s political climate.

During a recent interview with a private television channel, Nayyar Hussain Bukhari articulated the PPP’s position, asserting that a fresh electoral mandate is essential if the present government feels its position is threatened. Bukhari suggested that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif should recommend to President Asif Ali Zardari the dissolution of the National Assembly to pave the way for new elections. He emphasized that the current political landscape requires a clear and renewed mandate to address ongoing issues effectively.

Bukhari’s statement also underscored the PPP’s willingness to support the government in Parliament, provided there is a meaningful dialogue between the parties. He pointed out that President Zardari has shown a willingness to mediate and play a constructive role in the political process. However, Bukhari stressed that for such support to be effective, it must be based on substantive and productive discussions. “PPP is ready to strengthen the government in Parliament, but it should deliver something meaningful,” he said. Bukhari warned that any attempts to undermine the political system could have detrimental consequences for the country.

Reflecting on the PPP’s historical stance, Bukhari recalled the party’s acceptance of election results despite reservations. He questioned, “If we hadn’t supported the PML-N, would the parliament and the Chief Executive’s office be functioning today?” This comment highlights the PPP’s significant role in stabilizing the government during previous political crises. By acknowledging its past contributions, the PPP is reinforcing its commitment to maintaining parliamentary and executive functions.

The PPP’s call for fresh elections is set against a backdrop of growing political uncertainty and turmoil. The party’s stance underscores the critical need for resolution and stability within Pakistan’s political landscape. The call for dissolution reflects the PPP’s concern for ensuring that democratic processes are upheld and that political stability is achieved in the face of ongoing challenges.
