Iran also called United States to stop supporting Israel and said the world failed to safeguard the region

TEHRAN: Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani stated on Monday that while Iran is not aiming to escalate regional tensions, it believes that punishing Israel is necessary to prevent further instability. This statement follows the recent assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31. Kanaani emphasized that Iran’s actions are intended to establish regional stability through deterrence against what he termed as the “adventurism of the Zionist regime.” He asserted that such measures are seen as inevitable in the current context.
Kanaani called on the United States to cease its support for Israel, criticizing the international community for failing to maintain regional stability. He urged for global backing in holding Israel accountable. To underscore this position, Iran’s foreign ministry summoned ambassadors and heads of missions for a meeting with acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani on Monday. This meeting aimed to reaffirm Iran’s intent to respond to Israel’s actions.
In a move reflecting Tehran’s stance, an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will be convened on Wednesday at Iran’s request. The meeting will address the killing of Haniyeh and discuss Iran’s planned response. Haniyeh’s assassination is part of a broader conflict between Hamas and Israel, which has been ongoing for nearly 11 months.
Despite accusations from Tehran and its allies, including Hamas and Hezbollah, Israeli officials have not claimed responsibility for the killing. The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps’ top commander, Hossein Salami, reiterated the group’s threat that Israel “will receive punishment in due time.” The situation remains tense, with Iran positioning itself against Israeli actions and seeking to rally international support for its response.
