WASHINGTON: State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized on Wednesday that Israel must conduct a thorough investigation into allegations of sexual abuse against Palestinian detainees by its soldiers. Miller stressed the need for “zero tolerance” for any perpetrators of such abuses. In response to a video aired by Israel’s Channel 12, which appeared to show soldiers removing a detainee from the view of surveillance cameras to commit abuses, Miller noted that U.S. officials had reviewed the footage.
He condemned the reports of sexual abuse as “horrific” and called for a comprehensive investigation by the Israeli government and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). He added that any detainees who have been sexually assaulted or raped must have their cases thoroughly investigated, and those responsible should be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. The White House also expressed deep concern over reports of rape, torture, and abuse of Palestinian prisoners. White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre underscored the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring due process.
