KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has issued a stern warning to the coalition government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif amid reports of a potential replacement for Governor Sindh, Kamran Tessori. Senior MQM-P leaders, including Farooq Sattar and Khawaja Izharul Hassan, have expressed concerns that any unilateral decision regarding Tessori’s position could lead the party to withdraw from the coalition.
Farooq Sattar, a senior MQM-P leader, emphasized that Tessori, a member of their party, was assured by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) that he would remain in his role as Sindh governor. Sattar stated, “The Sindh governor belongs to the MQM-P, and it was agreed upon in meetings with the PML-N that Tessori would stay.” His comments follow recent media speculation suggesting that the PML-N and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) were considering replacing Tessori with Bashir Memon.
In response to these rumors, Tessori has affirmed that he will continue in his position as long as he retains the confidence of President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and MQM-P leader Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui. Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has clarified that there are no official reports indicating Tessori’s replacement.
Similarly, Khawaja Izharul Hassan, another senior MQM-P leader, supported Sattar’s position, arguing against the governor’s removal. Hassan highlighted the importance of having a governor from an urban area, particularly when the chief minister is from a rural region. The MQM-P’s threat to withdraw from the coalition underscores the sensitive nature of internal political agreements and the potential implications for the stability of the current government.
