Petition states High Court’s June 25 ruling on Sheikh Rashid case was unlawful, Sindh Govt seeks reversal

KARACHI: The Sindh government has filed a petition with the Supreme Court of Pakistan contesting the Islamabad High Court’s recent decision to dismiss a case against Awami Muslim League (AML) leader Sheikh Rashid. The case pertains to derogatory remarks Rashid made about Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, Chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and former Foreign Minister.
In June, the Islamabad High Court had dismissed similar cases against Rashid filed in Sindh and Balochistan. These cases were based on allegations that Rashid used offensive language against Bhutto-Zardari during a media appearance. The Sindh government’s petition challenges the legality of the High Court’s decision, arguing that the dismissal was unwarranted and not properly adjudicated.
The petition, submitted to the Supreme Court, asserts that the judge in the Islamabad High Court did not adequately review the case during the chamber hearing and failed to apply a thorough judicial analysis. The Sindh government contends that Rashid’s remarks had incited his party workers, potentially leading to political unrest. The petition emphasizes that the dismissal of the case overlooked the necessity for further investigation, particularly given Rashid’s alleged admission of guilt.
The Sindh government’s petition seeks to overturn the High Court’s decision, asserting that a proper judicial process was not followed and that the case warrants a more detailed examination. The outcome of this petition could have significant implications for the ongoing legal challenges faced by Sheikh Rashid and the broader political context surrounding the case.
