PESHAWAR: Federal Health Secretary Nadeem Mahbub conducted an inspection at Peshawar Airport on Wednesday to evaluate the ongoing surveillance and preventive measures aimed at curbing the spread of mpox in Pakistan. His visit underscores the government’s proactive approach to safeguarding public health, particularly in light of the potential risks associated with international travel.

During the visit, Secretary Nadeem Mahbub engaged with officials from the Civil Aviation Authority, along with doctors and medical personnel stationed at the airport, to review the health protocols currently in place. A comprehensive briefing was provided by the Border Health Services team, detailing the preventive strategies implemented to detect and contain any mpox cases among incoming travelers.

In his remarks, Secretary Mahbub expressed satisfaction with the current situation regarding mpox in Pakistan, noting the effectiveness of the surveillance system established at airports across the country. “The situation regarding mpox in Pakistan is satisfactory,” he affirmed, adding that the screening process is bolstered by the use of thermal scanners, in accordance with World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines.

The Secretary highlighted that ongoing training programs for health workers are a crucial component of the government’s strategy, ensuring that medical personnel are well-prepared to handle any potential mpox threats. He emphasized that his visit was part of a broader effort to personally oversee the arrangements and ensure that all protocols are being rigorously followed.

“The Border Health Services staff is actively engaged in screening travellers, and the Ministry of Health is committed to ensuring all preventive measures against mpox are enforced rigorously,” he stated. Secretary Mahbub assured that with these robust strategies in place, Pakistan is well-positioned to maintain public health safety amidst ongoing international travel.

The visit to Peshawar Airport by the Federal Health Secretary serves as a clear signal of the government’s dedication to preventing the spread of mpox and protecting the health of the nation’s citizens. The Ministry of Health continues to monitor the situation closely, remaining vigilant in its efforts to prevent any outbreaks and maintain the country’s public health integrity.
