RAHIM YAR KHAN: In a significant move to combat riverine dacoits operating in the border regions of Sindh and Punjab, the police forces of both provinces have launched a joint intelligence-based operation. The crackdown will target three notorious gangs: Sher, Andhar, and Kosh.

The operation focuses on areas including Ghotki, Kashmore, Rajanpur, and Rahim Yar Khan. The Punjab government has significantly increased the bounty on these bandits from Rs1 million to Rs10 million. Sindh IG Ghulam Nabi Memon confirmed that Punjab’s IG Usman Anwar reached out to collaborate on this initiative. Memon noted that both provinces regularly exchange intelligence to disrupt dacoits’ sanctuaries and coordinate joint ground operations.

Memon explained that the joint effort aims to address jurisdictional challenges in the riverine areas, where dacoits often shift locations to evade capture. Despite these challenges, both provinces are committed to a unified approach against the outlaws. The operation follows a recent attack by the dacoits in Machka that resulted in the deaths of 12 police officers.

SSP Ghotki Sammer Noor reported that the crackdown is already underway, with some dacoits killed and others arrested through coordinated efforts between the Sindh and Punjab police. The recent police attack was seen as a retaliatory move by the outlaws.

Punjab police sources revealed that three primary dacoit gangs—Kosh, Sher, and Andhar—are actively targeting law enforcement. Additionally, gangs led by Bux Ali Sher and Gudail Sher have launched attacks in the border areas. SSP Kashmore Bashir Barohi indicated that the gangs of Rahib Sher and Tanu Sher, previously known for targeting police, are now receiving support from another group led by Yaqoob Mirani.

Following the recent martyrdom of police officials in Rahim Yar Khan, additional personnel and armored vehicles have been deployed to Kashmore and the surrounding border areas. The dacoits are exploiting the aftermath of recent rains, with 10 to 15 feet of water accumulating around the Indus River, complicating police efforts to reach their hideouts.

Moreover, the dacoits have taken police constable Ahmed Nawaz hostage, demanding that the police withdraw from the riverine areas and vacate their checkpoints. They have threatened to kill the abducted officer if their demands are not met and have released a video of the captive appealing to the Punjab Chief Minister, IG, and DPO Rahim Yar Khan for assistance.

An FIR has been lodged against over 140 dacoits from the Kosh, Sher, and Salra gangs following the Rahim Yar Khan ambush. The FIR names 131 attackers, with 10 others listed as unknown. Charges include murder, attempted murder, and anti-terrorism offenses. The Punjab government has also raised the head money on riverine dacoits from Rs1 million to Rs10 million. The Punjab Home Department has released the names, pictures, and bounties of 20 notorious bandits, including Shahid s/o Kamal, Mujeeb s/o Aman Ullah, Wahab s/o Aman Ullah, Ghani s/o Ali Bux, Ahmer aka Shobi s/o Rasool, and others.
