“Give the People Their Rights” Movement

KARACHI: Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has called on the 250 million citizens of Pakistan to join a nationwide shutter-down strike on Wednesday, August 28, 2024. The strike is part of the “Give the People Their Rights” movement. During the protests, the government has promised to fulfill several key commitments as outlined in a formal agreement. These include: Reduction in Electricity Bills: The government will lower electricity bills and enforce the actual cost of power. Review of IPP Contracts: A reassessment of Independent Power Producer (IPP) contracts will be conducted, including an investigation into financial irregularities and accountability for the embezzlement of billions of rupees.
Tax System Overhaul:
Removal of levies and taxes on petrol.
Reversal of additional taxes on salaried individuals.
Termination of hostile tax policies against exporters and the business community, specifically under schemes deemed anti-business.
End to Perks:
Abolition of luxury vehicles, free fuel, electricity, and housing benefits for Members of Parliament, military officers, judges, and government officials.
