LAHORE: On Tuesday, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed gratitude for the relief provided to the masses on electricity bills, attributing the measures to the guidance of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), she stated, “Thanks be to the Higher Power, the masses are getting relief on the electricity bills on the advice and wish of Nawaz Sharif.”
In a related development, Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori has advocated for similar relief measures in Sindh, urging Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to follow Punjab’s lead in addressing high electricity bills. Tessori’s letter emphasized that the people of Sindh should also benefit from relief initiatives akin to those implemented in Punjab.
The political discourse extended further on Sunday when Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari criticized the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) for its contradictory stance on the relief measures. Bokhari accused the PPP of engaging in dual practices—holding talks with the Punjab government while simultaneously opposing the relief provided to Punjab’s residents. “The PPP is holding talks with the Punjab government on one side. On the other side of the wall, the PPP is speaking against the relief given to the people of Punjab,” she said.
Bokhari commended Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for her significant contributions, highlighting her efforts in infrastructural development and social welfare. “Maryam Nawaz is investing Rs 400 billion on the roads across the province. She is also looking to ensure the reduction of the electricity bills,” she noted. Additionally, Bokhari emphasized Nawaz’s initiatives to provide Rs1.5 million in loans for housing construction and to establish new hospitals with accessible medicines in Punjab.
Bokhari expressed frustration over what she perceives as a lack of acknowledgment for these advancements, stating, “It is out of my understanding that those who are defeated cannot see the development and progress.” The exchange of political statements underscores the ongoing debate over relief measures and development policies, reflecting the broader dynamics within Pakistani politics.
