The repeated targeting of journalists in Ghotki has sparked outrage among media professionals and human rights activists, who are calling for swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice

SUKKUR: In a tragic incident, local journalist Bachal Ghuniyo was killed by unidentified gunmen in the Rawanti area of Sindh’s Ghotki district. Ghuniyo, who was affiliated with Awaz TV, was ambushed and fatally shot by armed men who fled the scene immediately after the attack. His body was later transported to Ubauro Hospital for further examination.

The police have launched an investigation into the murder, with initial suspicions suggesting that the attack may have been motivated by personal conflicts from Ghuniyo’s past. The shocking incident has sent waves of concern through the local media community, raising alarms over the safety of journalists in the region. This killing comes just months after the murder of another journalist, Nasrullah Gadani, who was gunned down near Mirpur Mathelo in Ghotki district. Gadani, on his way to the Mirpur Mathelo Press Club, was attacked by armed assailants and sustained critical injuries.

Ghuniyo was first treated at the Mirpur Mathelo District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital before being transferred to Sheikh Zayed Medical College Hospital. Gadani was eventually moved to Aga Khan Hospital in Karachi, where he succumbed to his injuries. The repeated targeting of journalists in Ghotki has sparked outrage among media professionals and human rights activists, who are calling for swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice. The murder of Ghuniyo has intensified calls for better protection measures for journalists, particularly in areas where they are vulnerable to such attacks.

Sindh Chief Minister has expressed deep sorrow over the killings, stating, “I am deeply in grief and sorrow along with Nasrullah’s family and the media organization he was affiliated with.” The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of journalists and reiterated his commitment to addressing the concerns of the media community. The police have pledged to conduct a thorough investigation to apprehend those responsible for Ghuniyo’s murder. As the investigation continues, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by journalists in their pursuit of truth and justice.
