KARACHI: The Pakistan-China Institute (PCI), led by Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, recently hosted a significant gathering as part of its ‘Friends of Silk Road’ series. The event brought together leaders from eight major political parties to express their strong support for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and to discuss the outcomes of the Communist Party of China’s (CPC) Third Plenary Session. The diverse representation from both government and opposition parties underscored a unified stance on strengthening Pakistan’s ties with China.
Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Chairman of PCI, opened the event by highlighting the profound impact of the CPC on China’s development. He detailed the CPC’s transformative journey since 1979, noting that China’s per capita income has surged from $157 to $12,000, with its GDP expanding from $150 billion to $18 trillion. “The CPC has revolutionized China’s progress,” Sayed said, emphasizing the party’s pivotal role in the country’s remarkable economic growth.
Senator Sherry Rehman, representing the PPP, spoke about the global implications of the CPC’s Third Plenary Session. “China’s influence extends significantly to the Global South, and CPEC presents vast investment opportunities for Pakistan,” she asserted. Rehman lauded China’s Global Security Initiative as a positive force for peace and stability.
Saadia Khaqan Abbasi praised China’s advancements, focusing on technology and human development. “China’s emphasis on security and development is noteworthy,” she remarked. Senator Shibli Faraz of PTI cited China’s development model as a benchmark for global progress, describing CPEC as a beacon of hope for Pakistan. “The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) represents a pathway to shared prosperity,” Faraz added.
MQM’s Taha Ahmed Khan emphasized Karachi’s strategic importance due to its proximity to the CPEC route. He condemned recent attacks on Chinese nationals and reaffirmed MQM’s commitment to their safety. “Karachi’s role as Pakistan’s trade hub and its connection to CPEC is crucial,” Khan noted.
Senator Ali Zafar of PTI discussed the CPC’s continuity in policy and anti-corruption measures as key factors in China’s success. “Pakistan can benefit greatly by adopting similar approaches,” he said. Yang Nuo, Minister-Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy, described the Third Plenary Session as a blueprint for China’s future reforms. “The session lays the foundation for continued progress and development,” Nuo stated.
