SANAA: At least 25 people have been reported dead following devastating flash floods in Yemen’s northwestern province of Al-Mahwit, according to a local health source on Wednesday. The calamity struck after more than 24 hours of heavy rainfall, which led to the collapse of three dams and resulted in the destruction of numerous homes in the Malhan district on Tuesday.
Rescue operations are actively ongoing as several villagers remain unaccounted for. The intense rainfall has caused significant damage, leaving many in urgent need of assistance. Earlier this month, similar heavy rains and subsequent flash floods in the northern provinces of Hodeidah and Hajjah resulted in 45 fatalities and the destruction of over 12,000 homes, highlighting the severe impact of the ongoing weather events.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised alarms about the potential spread of diseases due to contaminated water and inadequate sanitation amidst the rainy season in the conflict-stricken country. Yemen’s prolonged civil war, which began in late 2014 following the Houthi group’s seizure of several northern provinces and the Yemeni government’s retreat from the capital, Sanaa, has exacerbated the country’s vulnerability to such disasters. As Yemen grapples with both natural calamities and ongoing conflict, the international community continues to express concern and offer support to mitigate the impact of these crises.
