ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan, Qazi Faez Isa, has taken a decisive step towards resolving the long-standing issue of judicial vacancies by urging the chief justices of the high courts to accelerate the process of nominating additional judges. In a letter dated August 28, 2024, Justice Isa emphasized the urgent need to fill these vacancies to ensure the effective and efficient functioning of the judiciary amidst a rising backlog of cases.
Justice Isa’s communication highlights the critical role a fully staffed judiciary plays in maintaining the smooth operation of the legal system and safeguarding the constitutional rights of citizens. The Chief Justice’s call comes at a time when the judiciary is under mounting pressure to deliver timely justice.
The letter underscores the impact of judicial vacancies on the judiciary’s ability to handle cases efficiently. It also notes that the Supreme Court, which is constitutionally mandated to consist of sixteen judges, including the Chief Justice, had only recently returned to full strength on June 25, 2024. This restoration followed a prolonged period of reduced operations that lasted two and a half years, which had significantly hindered the Court’s case management. Additionally, the Shariat Appellate Bench, a crucial component of Pakistan’s judicial system, resumed its full capacity in July following the appointment of a second aalim member.
