KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued an update indicating that Cyclone Asna, which had previously posed a significant threat to Karachi and surrounding coastal regions, has now moved far from the city. The storm is currently positioned approximately 500 kilometers southeast of Karachi, 350 kilometers south and southeast of Ormara, and 260 kilometers southeast of Gwadar.
The PMD has reported that while the cyclone’s direct impact on Karachi has abated, the city can still expect light rain or drizzle over the next 24 hours. The forecast predicts partly cloudy skies with intermittent light showers, which are expected to offer some respite from the oppressive heat but are unlikely to cause significant disruption. The cyclone’s strong winds have also diminished, with current wind speeds recorded at 12 kilometers per hour from the northeast, indicating a return to more normal weather conditions.
In light of the reduced threat, the PMD has lifted the advisory that previously restricted sea activities. Sindh fishermen have been given the green light to resume their operations starting today. However, fishermen operating off the coast of Balochistan are advised to avoid deep waters for an additional day. This precautionary measure is due to lingering concerns about the cyclone’s residual impact, which could still affect maritime conditions.
PMD Director General Mehar Sahibzada Khan emphasized that although Cyclone Asna has lost its intensity and is no longer a direct threat, its initial formation off the Karachi-Gwadar coast had the potential to bring substantial rainfall to the western coastal areas. The PMD continues to monitor the situation closely and is prepared to issue further updates if necessary.
Additionally, the meteorological office noted that sea breezes, which had been disrupted by the cyclone, might return to Karachi by the evening or night. This return of sea breezes could help stabilize the weather conditions and provide some relief from the humidity. The PMD’s ongoing surveillance and timely updates are crucial in managing the impacts of such storms and ensuring that residents and maritime operators are well-informed of any potential hazards.
