Russia condemns misuse of frozen assets for military aid to Ukraine

Russia has labeled this decision as an “illegal” and aggressive action that exacerbates the conflict rather than working towards a peaceful resolution

Metro Morning Report

MOSCOW: Russia has strongly condemned France’s recent decision to allocate part of its 1.4 billion euros ($1.5 billion) in revenues from frozen Russian assets for the purchase of military equipment for Ukraine. The move, announced by the French Defense Ministry, is part of the European Peace Facility’s support measure for Ukraine, aimed at bolstering its defense capabilities amidst ongoing hostilities with Russia.

This initiative involves the procurement of critical military supplies from French industry, including ammunition, artillery, and air defense systems. The European Commission has authorized this measure as part of a broader European Union effort to support Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, following the EU’s decision to freeze approximately 200 billion euros of Russian assets since the invasion began in 2022.

Russia has labeled this decision as an “illegal” and aggressive action that exacerbates the conflict rather than working towards a peaceful resolution. The Russian government has consistently argued that the use of frozen assets to fund military operations undermines international law and further inflames tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

In response to the EU’s decision, which includes a G7 agreement reached in June, Russia has reiterated its stance that such measures are counterproductive and violate principles of international diplomacy. The EU’s use of these assets—primarily held in Belgium’s Euroclear clearinghouse—marks a significant escalation in the conflict, further alienating Russia from diplomatic and economic negotiations.

Russian officials emphasize that this approach not only contravenes legal norms but also highlights a broader pattern of Western nations prioritizing military support over constructive dialogue. Russia remains committed to addressing the conflict through diplomatic means and underscores the need for a balanced and lawful resolution that respects all parties’ sovereignty and interests.

The Russian government continues to call for a cessation of military aid to Ukraine and advocates for international negotiations aimed at de-escalating the conflict and achieving a lasting peace.
