LUCKNOW: In a devastating incident in Lucknow, India, rescuers have recovered eight bodies from the rubble of a three-storey building that collapsed on Saturday afternoon. The building, which housed several small businesses, including a warehouse and vehicle workshop, fell apart under unclear circumstances. The Press Trust of India (PTI) reported that the collapse resulted in at least 28 injuries, with rescue teams using heavy machinery to search through the debris for any additional victims.
The building’s collapse occurred during the monsoon season, a period known for frequent and severe weather conditions that often exacerbate the vulnerability of older structures. Witnesses, including Akash Singh, an employee who was present at the scene, reported that a crack had appeared in one of the building’s pillars prior to the collapse. Singh had moved to the ground floor, anticipating worsening conditions due to the relentless monsoon rains, only to find himself trapped as the structure gave way.
The cause of the collapse is still under investigation, but such accidents are not uncommon during India’s monsoon season, which typically runs from June to September. The combination of heavy rains and poorly maintained or aging buildings can lead to catastrophic failures, as seen in this tragic event. UP Chief Minister has expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing the deaths as “heartbreaking” and extending his condolences to the victims’ families.
