ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar offered a comprehensive view of his current legal battles, economic policies, and the state of Pakistan’s military leadership. His remarks shed light on various aspects of his role in the government and his ongoing challenges. He began by commending Pakistan’s military leadership, which he described as “professional, honest, and dedicated to safeguarding the country.” He praised the cooperation between the military and the government, highlighting the significant role this partnership plays in national stability and progress.
Ishaq Dar’s respect for the military’s professionalism underscores the importance of this relationship in the context of current political and security dynamics. Turning to his legal challenges, Dar addressed allegations of tax evasion that have been a focal point of his public and legal scrutiny. He explained that his inclusion in the Panama Papers was due to issues with tax return submissions, which he asserts were misrepresented. “My name was added in Panama for not submitting tax returns for many years,” Dar clarified, adding, “I have never been 20 minutes late for a tax return.”
The deputy prime minister detailed the complexities of his legal situation, including the issuance of red warrants against him, which were later canceled by Interpol after he presented evidence proving his compliance. He also discussed Pakistan’s economic situation, acknowledging the severe impact of recent years on the country’s economic standing. He noted that Pakistan, which was on track to become the 24th largest economy globally, has now fallen to the 47th position. Despite this setback, Dar expressed optimism about economic recovery. He pointed to a reduction in inflation rates and anticipated reforms aimed at improving economic stability, including a new monetary policy expected to lower interest rates.
In addition to these measures, Dar highlighted ongoing efforts to privatize government institutions as part of a broader strategy to stimulate economic growth and efficiency. He emphasized the need for judicial reforms to strengthen the rule of law and enhance institutional accountability. On the international front, Dar highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening relations with key global partners. He noted the importance of the recent meetings with British officials and the upcoming visits by British ministers, which reflect a concerted effort to enhance cooperation with the UK. These diplomatic engagements are seen as crucial for fostering stronger bilateral ties and advancing Pakistan’s international interests.
