KARACHI: In a strong rebuttal to recent statements made by Jamaat-e-Islami leader Hafiz Naeem, the spokesperson for Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Pakistan has leveled serious accusations against him, alleging misuse of city resources and a deliberate attempt to deflect public attention from Jamaat-e-Islami’s own shortcomings.
The MQM spokesperson accused Hafiz Naeem of engaging in a smear campaign against MQM while overlooking the pressing issues under his own leadership. According to the spokesperson, both the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Jamaat-e-Islami are engaged in a contentious struggle over the distribution of city resources. The spokesperson claimed that PPP had directed Hafiz Naeem to focus on criticizing MQM, aiming to mislead the public by diverting attention from the inefficacies of the Jamaat-e-Islami administration.
The criticism extended to the state of Karachi’s infrastructure, which, according to the MQM spokesperson, has significantly deteriorated under the watch of Jamaat-e-Islami. Residents, they argue, have only seen worsening conditions—broken roads, overflowing garbage dumps, and an overabundance of Jamaat-e-Islami banners—highlighting the party’s failure to deliver effective governance. The spokesperson derided Jamaat-e-Islami’s claims of leadership success as ineffectual, likening their efforts to a futile exercise, symbolized by the phrase “a cat scratching at a pole.”
Further criticism was directed at Hafiz Naeem’s management of local resources. The MQM spokesperson described Naeem’s attempts to present himself as a leader of the Muslim Ummah as unsubstantiated. They suggested that Naeem, who had previously engaged in negotiations with PPP, should not now express dissatisfaction with the state of Karachi. The spokesperson dismissed Naeem’s concerns as “crocodile tears,” arguing that he is complicit in the city’s current issues due to his inadequate management.
The statement also addressed Hafiz Naeem’s complaints regarding MQM’s mayor’s lack of authority, attributing the problem to Naeem’s own administrative failures. The MQM spokesperson underscored that the ongoing issues in Karachi are a direct result of poor management by Jamaat-e-Islami officials, not shortcomings on the part of MQM. This exchange highlights the ongoing political tensions in Karachi and reflects the broader struggle between political parties for control and influence over the city’s resources and governance.
