KARACHI: The province-wide push to eradicate polio in Sindh has gained substantial momentum, with district administrations spearheading the ongoing Sub-National Immunization Days (SNIDs) campaign. Running from September 9 to 15, this crucial drive aims to vaccinate 9.4 million children under the age of five across 30 districts, with a particular focus on high-risk areas and underperforming union councils.
As the campaign enters its third day, initial reports indicate significant progress. Many districts are meeting their daily vaccination targets, although efforts are being intensified in areas facing greater challenges. The drive reflects a concerted effort to address vaccine hesitancy and ensure comprehensive coverage. Responding to directives from Sindh Chief Secretary Syed Asif Hyder Shah, divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, assistant commissioners, and district health officers (DHOs) have been actively involved in the campaign. Their hands-on approach underscores the government’s commitment to reaching every child and overcoming obstacles such as vaccine refusals.
In many districts, senior officials have taken direct action to address refusal cases. For example, in District Badin, Assistant Commissioner Shaharyar led efforts in Goth Aaru Pussiyo and Goth Kirar Chang, successfully converting over 231 refusal cases by engaging with local influencers and community leaders. This proactive approach has been replicated across various districts, contributing to the campaign’s growing success.
Irshad Sodhar, provincial coordinator at the Emergency Operation Center (EOC) Sindh, emphasized that this level of involvement is crucial in overcoming vaccine hesitancy, which remains a significant hurdle in some areas. The continued dedication of senior officials and the strategic outreach to communities are pivotal in the fight against polio in Sindh. The campaign’s progress demonstrates a robust commitment to public health and the eradication of polio, reflecting the collaborative efforts of government officials and community leaders to ensure the success of this vital immunization drive.
The combined efforts of Sindh’s district administrations, alongside the active participation of local communities, are bringing the province closer to its goal of becoming polio-free. Significant progress has been made in the ongoing Sub-National Immunization Days (SNIDs) campaign, with many districts meeting their daily vaccination targets. However, challenges persist, particularly in overcoming logistical hurdles and addressing pockets of vaccine hesitancy. Despite these obstacles, the dedication and leadership of district officials, as well as the enthusiastic support from local communities, provide renewed hope that Sindh is poised to make a critical advance in its battle against polio.
