ISLAMABAD: In a move aimed at improving cooperation between the government and opposition, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq has proposed a ‘charter of parliament’ to be signed by all parties. This initiative seeks to foster better collaboration despite ongoing leadership tensions. During a recent assembly session, Sadiq suggested that even if party leaders do not reach an agreement, members of parliament could still work towards signing a cross-party charter. He highlighted that such an agreement would bolster parliamentary conduct and enhance cooperation among legislators.
The session was marked by disruptions from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) members, who demanded the issuance of production orders for arrested lawmakers. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Khursheed Shah intervened, advocating for PTI members to be allowed to speak. Reflecting on past practices, Sadiq noted that production orders were not issued during the PTI government but assured that he would act in the best interests of parliament. “I will do what is right,” he stated, announcing the formation of a committee to address the matter promptly.
In response to the late-night raid on the Parliament House, Sadiq expressed his intention to hold those responsible accountable. “No one will remain silent about the incident, and decisive action will be taken,” he declared. He has requested all video footage to identify those involved and mentioned that an FIR might be filed if necessary. Recalling previous attacks on the Parliament and Parliament Lodges, Sadiq emphasized the need for a firm stance against such violations. “I was the Speaker during the first attack on Parliament, and we must stand firm this time,” he remarked.
