ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has indicated that it may offer conditional support for the proposed constitutional amendments, depending on how its own version of the amendments is received by the government. This development emerged from a recent meeting of the Parliamentary Special Committee chaired by Khursheed Shah, where efforts to build a consensus on the amendments were underway. PTI’s delegation, including Opposition Leader Umar Ayub and PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar, presented their own version of the proposed changes to the committee.
During the meeting, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar expressed dissatisfaction with the amendment process, describing it as being handled “in the dark of the night.” He criticized the government for not sharing the text of the bill with PTI and accused it of attempting to undermine the judiciary. Gohar also mentioned that the government had not indicated that a vote on the amendments was imminent. He noted that Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s suggestions were not incorporated into the current discussions, and PTI had only been listening without offering new proposals.
In a parallel development, a significant meeting between Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and a government delegation took place in Islamabad. The government delegation, led by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, and Interior Minister Mohsin Raza Naqvi, engaged with JUI representatives, including Secretary General Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidri and other key figures. Discussions focused on the constitutional amendments, with the JUI expressing its stance on the proposed changes.
Earlier, Maulana Fazlur Rehman had briefed JUI’s parliamentary members on the ongoing discussions with both the government and opposition. The JUI’s position and its interactions with the government are crucial in shaping the final outcome of the constitutional amendment process. As the discussions continue, the government faces the challenge of reconciling the various proposals and concerns raised by different political parties to achieve a broad consensus on the amendments.
