Farooq Sattar mentions JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman had some secondary disagreements but understood most issues

ISLAMABAD: Farooq Sattar, leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Pakistan, has indicated the party’s conditional support for the proposed constitutional amendment, provided it aligns with the “greater national interest.” In remarks made to the media following an informal meeting at the Speaker’s Chamber, Sattar highlighted that while constitutional amendments are generally met with skepticism, he believes that if such reforms are crucial for the nation’s stability, they should be pursued.

Sattar underscored the importance of reviewing the detailed content of the proposed amendments before making a final decision. He acknowledged the inclusion of reforms in the amendment but emphasized that the MQM would need to evaluate the specifics thoroughly.

The MQM leader also touched upon the interactions between the ruling coalition and other political figures, noting that Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman had expressed some secondary disagreements but largely understood the proposed changes. Efforts to garner support from Rehman were made by the ruling coalition late on Saturday night, driven by the government’s need to secure an additional eight votes for the amendments.

Sattar criticized the government for its handling of inflation and unemployment, urging it to address these pressing issues alongside constitutional reforms. He pointed out the backlog of unresolved cases and questioned the government’s commitment to tackling the economic crisis.

The fate of the proposed amendment faces uncertainty due to legal challenges. The Supreme Court’s recent clarification on the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) application regarding the implementation of the July 12 order raises concerns that the amendment may be struck down due to legal defects. The ECP’s failure to fulfill its constitutional obligations by not implementing the order within the mandated 90 days has further complicated matters.

The government has prepared to introduce the constitutional amendment bill in both houses of parliament today. However, the bill is expected to face significant legal hurdles. Additionally, the ECP is under scrutiny for its conduct during the Feb 8 general elections, with allegations of complicity from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and issues related to Form 45 and Form 47 results.
