Senator Shibli Faraz says top court has made it clear – the status of our members is now resolved

ISLAMABAD: Senate Opposition Leader and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) member, Senator Shibli Faraz, has hailed the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on reserved seats as a significant triumph for his party. Speaking at a press conference at Parliament House on Saturday, alongside fellow PTI leader Aun Abbas, Faraz lauded the eight-member bench for issuing a “clear and decisive ruling” that has resolved the status of PTI members.

Faraz highlighted the importance of the Supreme Court’s decision, stating that it has provided much-needed clarity amid ongoing political uncertainty. “We promptly approached the Supreme Court on the reserved seats issue, and now the court has made it clear – the status of our members is resolved,” Faraz asserted.

The senator used the occasion to criticize the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), particularly for its handling of electoral processes. He pointed to the recent by-election results in Rahim Yar Khan, which were swiftly notified, contrasting them with the unresolved general election results that have been pending for six months. Faraz expressed frustration over what he described as the ECP’s failure to address PTI’s concerns in a timely manner. “The ECP is responsible for conducting the most controversial election in the country’s history,” he remarked, lamenting the delays in decisions affecting PTI while other electoral matters see prompt resolutions.

Faraz accused the ECP of neglecting its constitutional duty to ensure free and fair elections, arguing that the ongoing delays are harming Pakistan’s political stability. He particularly condemned the postponement of local body elections as a “malicious act” that exacerbates instability. Faraz also criticized the election tribunals for failing to announce results, which he believes has further stalled the democratic process.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court issued a four-page ruling sharply criticizing the delays in implementing its decision regarding reserved seats. The ruling, which involves the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), urged the ECP to immediately release the list of PTI candidates returned to the assemblies. The court emphasized that the absence of an election symbol does not invalidate a party’s legal and constitutional rights, reaffirming PTI’s status as a recognized political entity with secured seats in both the national and provincial assemblies.
