The UN chief underscored the urgency of halting the bloodshed, declaring, “It is time for the release of the hostages. Time to silence the guns. Time to stop the suffering that has engulfed the region”

NEW YORK: As the one-year anniversary of the devastating war in Gaza approaches, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued a poignant call for peace, urging the global community to reflect on the tragic events that unfolded on October 7, 2023. In a heartfelt video message, Guterres expressed solidarity with the victims of the conflict and their families, emphasizing the profound scars left by the violence.

“This is a day for the global community to repeat in the loudest voice our utter condemnation of the abhorrent acts of Hamas, including the taking of hostages,” he stated, highlighting the need for collective accountability and recognition of the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Guterres acknowledged the “unspeakable violence” endured by those affected, noting that the ramifications of the initial attacks have reverberated far beyond Gaza.

Since the outbreak of hostilities last October, the region has witnessed a harrowing escalation of violence, leading to significant suffering for both Palestinians in Gaza and the people of Lebanon. The UN chief underscored the urgency of halting the bloodshed, declaring, “It is time for the release of the hostages. Time to silence the guns. Time to stop the suffering that has engulfed the region.”

Local health authorities report staggering figures: over 41,800 lives have been lost in the conflict, predominantly among women and children, while nearly 97,000 individuals have sustained injuries. The relentless Israeli offensive has resulted in the near-total displacement of Gaza’s population, compounded by an ongoing blockade that has precipitated critical shortages of food, clean water, and medical supplies.

In the face of mounting humanitarian concerns, Israel’s military actions have drawn international scrutiny, including allegations of genocide now being investigated at the International Court of Justice. Guterres reaffirmed the necessity of establishing a lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, advocating for a future where Israel, Palestine, and their regional neighbors can coexist in peace and dignity, grounded in mutual respect.

As the world watches the grim anniversary of the Gaza war, Guterres’ call serves as a reminder of the urgent need for dialogue, international law, and justice in a region marred by violence and suffering. The UN Secretary-General’s message resonates with those yearning for a return to stability, echoing a collective hope for peace amid ongoing turmoil.
