Naqvi briefs PM that major highways had been reopened to traffic and situation was ‘rapidly returning to normal’

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened a crucial meeting with Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Sunday to address the worsening security situation in the capital, particularly following an attempted attack by activists of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). During the meeting, Prime Minister Sharif commended the Islamabad police for their “outstanding role” in thwarting what could have been a significant breach of law and order.

“The Islamabad police, alongside the Pakistan Army, Punjab police, and Rangers, played a vital role in maintaining peace,” he stated, acknowledging the sacrifices made by law enforcement personnel. The Prime Minister paid tribute to Constable Hameed Shah, who was martyred in the line of duty, asserting, “May Allah elevate the ranks of the martyr. The nation will always remember this sacrifice.” He also expressed solidarity with the constable’s family, directing authorities to provide them with necessary support.

Prime Minister Shehbaz emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Islamabad’s residents and restoring normalcy. “The safety of Islamabad’s residents and the protection of their lives and property have been ensured,” he remarked, adding that the situation in the capital is “rapidly returning to normal.” He highlighted that economic development remains a top priority, asserting that any attempts to destabilize Pakistan’s economy through unlawful means would be met with resolute resistance.

Tensions have been palpable in the federal capital, particularly during the ongoing protests initiated by PTI supporters. Despite stringent security measures, including the deployment of the Pakistan Army, imposition of Section 144, and road closures, PTI activists managed to converge at various locations, including D-Chowk— a significant site for political demonstrations. Heavy rain on Saturday lessened the impact of tear gas used by security forces, allowing protesters to gather more freely.

The situation escalated into confrontations between PTI supporters and law enforcement agencies, leading to stone-pelting and exchanges of tear gas. Reports indicated that Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ali Amin Gandapur, was briefly confined to the KP House, allegedly engaging in discussions with authorities amid conflicting reports regarding his potential arrest. The law enforcement agencies reported direct gunfire aimed at police personnel, with Inspector General of the Punjab Police commending the police for their efforts in maintaining order. He assured the public that authorities would not permit any disruptions to peace, reinforcing that Pakistan remains secure.
