LAHORE: An Anti-Terrorism Court in Lahore has granted interim bail to Salman Akram Raja, the Secretary General of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and a legal counsel, in connection with cases related to protests and rioting. The court approved the bail until October 16 against personal surety bonds of Rs2,00,000. Raja filed applications for interim bail in three separate cases registered at the Islam Pura, Lari Adda, and Masti Gate police stations.
Additionally, a two-member bench of the Lahore High Court, led by Justice Shahbaz Rizvi, addressed a request for pre-arrest bail related to a terrorism case filed against Raja in Islamabad, granting him protective bail until October 15, 2024. This terrorism case has been lodged against him at the Secretariat police station. The backdrop to these legal proceedings includes recent protests by PTI at D-Chowk, which resulted in a sedition and terrorism case filed against PTI founding chairman Imran Khan and several senior leaders.
The First Information Report (FIR) names notable figures, including Hammad Azhar, Ghulam Mohiuddin, MPA Shehbaz, Musarrat Jamshed Cheema, Sheikh Imtiaz, Ali Imtiaz, and Shabbir Gujar. According to the FIR, Imran Khan has allegedly received “extraordinary privileges” while in prison, enabling him to communicate with party leaders, which reportedly led to anti-state slogans being raised and vandalism during the protests.
Police reported that one PTI worker injured Constable Bilal during the unrest, resulting in the arrest of 16 workers at the scene and ongoing legal actions against them. Furthermore, multiple cases have been filed against PTI workers for violating Section 144, which prohibits gatherings under emergency laws. The protests, deemed illegal due to the ongoing emergency, have triggered a wave of legal actions against participants, exacerbating the ongoing political tensions surrounding the PTI and its leadership.
