KARACHI: The quest for a healthy lifestyle has become increasingly elusive for residents of Karachi, plagued by escalating safety and environmental issues that deter physical activity.
Security remains a pressing concern, as many citizens feel unsafe traversing public spaces, often avoiding streets and pathways due to the threat of robberies. This pervasive sense of insecurity has restricted opportunities for exercise, leaving many to forego walks or outdoor activities.
Compounding this issue is the dire state of local parks. Among the 46 parks managed by the Karachi Municipal Corporation and 550 overseen by the Town Municipal Corporation, most are in a state of neglect. Litter and waste have rendered these spaces uninviting, making it difficult for residents to walk, relax, or engage in outdoor fitness activities. Once-popular parks have become sites to be avoided, diminishing community engagement and outdoor recreation.
Furthermore, the fast-paced lifestyle of Karachi’s residents, coupled with an increasing reliance on technology, has distanced them from physical activities. The challenges of urban living have made it increasingly difficult for citizens to prioritize health and wellness in their daily routines.
As Karachi grapples with these issues, the need for comprehensive safety measures and environmental restoration is more critical than ever, as residents yearn for a city where they can safely enjoy outdoor spaces and lead healthier lives.
