KARACHI: The Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) elections for the 2024-26 term have concluded with remarkable results, as the Green Panel secured a clean sweep for the fifth consecutive time. This significant victory is particularly historic, as Lubna Jarrar has become the first female General Secretary in the organization’s history, marking a progressive milestone for female representation within the union.
Ijaz Ahmed has been elected as President, while Muhammad Nasir Sharif and Rahib Gaho have been appointed as Vice Presidents, ensuring a leadership team that is both experienced and committed to advancing the interests of journalists in Karachi. Further adding to the leadership structure, Talha Hashmi and Rubina Yasmin have been chosen as Joint Secretaries, and Yasir Mahmood will serve as Treasurer.
The newly constituted Executive Council features a diverse group of individuals, including Tabaan Zafar, Raheel Salman, Rashid Siddique Qarar, Zohaib Zardari, Ayesha Khan, Shireen Jami, Iqtidar Anwar, Mahmood Riaz, and Sultan Chaki Soomro. The inclusion of such a varied council signifies a breadth of perspectives that could enrich the union’s initiatives and strategies moving forward.
Delegates elected in this election include notable names such as G.M. Jamali, Ehtasham Anwar, Rafi Hussain Farooqi, Ghulam Akbar Jafari, Shahid Ghazali, Shehrbano, Aajiz Jamali, Kamran Lashari, Waqas Babar, Asghar Azim, Muneer Saqi, Moinullah Shah, Rashid Latif, Moosa Raza, Nasir Iqbal, Shumaila Nawaz, Aamir Khan, Ghazala Faseh, Mohammad Akhtar Ibn As, and Naeem Baig, among others, who will play crucial roles in representing the interests and voices of journalists across Karachi.
Green Panel head Hassan Abbas delivered an impassioned speech, emphasizing the need for unity and resilience within the journalistic community, particularly in challenging times. G.M. Jamali, the President of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), also spoke, highlighting the importance of solidarity among journalists to safeguard press freedom and integrity.
Meanwhile, Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori has extended his congratulations to the Green Panel following their resounding victory in the Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) elections. This significant win marks the fifth consecutive term for the Green Panel, highlighting the trust and confidence that journalists in Karachi place in their leadership. In his statement, Governor Tessori expressed his best wishes to the newly elected office-bearers, including President Ijaz Ahmed, General Secretary Lnabi Jarrar, and Vice Presidents Muhammad Nasir Sharif and Rahib Gaho.
