SUKKUR: Dr. Qadir Magsi, Chairman of the Sindh Tarraqi Passand Party, recently addressed the media at the Sukkur Press Club, announcing a series of protests aimed at blocking proposed canal projects on the Indus River by Punjab. He declared that on October 30, a sit-in will take place at Baberloi, which he characterized as a historic protest movement. This demonstration is intended to mark the beginning of a larger movement against the construction of canals and dams that he believes threaten the livelihoods of the people in Sindh. Following the initial protest, Dr. Magsi outlined a schedule for subsequent demonstrations: November 9 at the Hyderabad Hattri Bypass, November 20 at the Skarand Bypass, and November 24 in Karachi. He emphasized his commitment to launching a decisive movement to halt the dam projects on the Indus River, referencing historical attempts to construct the controversial Kalabagh Dam. He recalled that former military ruler General Zia-ul-Haq initiated discussions about the dam, and subsequent political figures, including Nawaz Sharif, have advocated for it. However, Dr. Magsi asserted that the Sindh Tarraqi Passand Party has consistently opposed such projects, viewing them as detrimental to the province.
