WASHINGTON: A letter from members of the U.S. Congress addressing the situation of the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has been received by President Joe Biden, as confirmed by State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller. This correspondence underscores the increasing attention on Pakistan’s political climate and the role of human rights in U.S.-Pakistan relations.

During a press briefing, Miller indicated that the members of Congress would receive a response to their letter in due course, reflecting the U.S. government’s commitment to addressing human rights concerns internationally. When questioned about the recent meeting between U.S. Assistant Secretary Monica Jacobson and Federal Secretary for Human Rights Allah Dino Khawaja, Miller mentioned that discussions focused on the significance of human rights and the strengthening of democratic institutions as foundational elements of U.S.-Pakistan relations.

He reiterated the U.S. commitment to supporting democracy in Pakistan, emphasizing the importance of allowing citizens the right to participate in democratic processes and exercise their fundamental freedoms. This engagement highlights the ongoing dialogue between the two countries amid a politically charged environment in Pakistan.
