KARACHI: The Sindh provincial administration held a critical meeting on Tuesday to evaluate and bolster security measures for Chinese nationals engaged in various projects across the province. This initiative comes in the wake of a tragic incident earlier this month, where a terrorist attack near Karachi airport resulted in the deaths of two Chinese engineers. Sindh Interior Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, who led the meeting with law enforcement and intelligence officials, emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of both China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and non-CPEC affiliated Chinese citizens.
Minister Lanjar remarked, “The security of CPEC and non-CPEC affiliated Chinese citizens must be coordinated and effective at every level.” He raised concerns about the overall safety of Chinese nationals working in collaboration with local businesses, stressing the necessity for sponsors to be made aware of their responsibilities regarding the arrival and security of foreign workers in Sindh. He stated that with formal support from the Sindh government, measures to enhance security for all foreign workers—especially those involved in CPEC and other projects—must be strengthened.
The meeting comes in the wake of the deadly explosion outside Karachi airport on October 6, which took the lives of two Chinese engineers working in the energy sector. This incident occurred just days before the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Islamabad, an event attended by numerous high-profile foreign dignitaries. The provincial administration’s proactive stance indicates a recognition of the vital role that security plays in maintaining the safety of foreign nationals and the stability of ongoing development projects in Sindh, particularly in the context of enhancing Sino-Pakistani relations through economic cooperation.
