JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia is set to convene the inaugural meeting of the “International Alliance to Implement the Two-State Solution” on Wednesday, aimed at advocating for the establishment of a Palestinian state. This initiative was announced last month during the UN General Assembly and seeks to unite Arab and Islamic nations with European countries in support of Palestinian statehood.
The two-day meeting in Riyadh will focus on critical issues such as humanitarian access, support for the UN agency responsible for Palestinian refugees, and strategies to advance a two-state solution amidst the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Notably, the European Union will be represented by Sven Koopmans, who serves as the special representative for the Middle East peace process.
The renewed discussions on a two-state solution come in the wake of the Gaza war, which has heightened tensions and made the prospect of peace seem increasingly elusive. The hard-right Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, remains firmly opposed to Palestinian statehood, complicating any efforts for resolution.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia has previously stated that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state is a prerequisite for the kingdom’s normalization of relations with Israel. Despite recent moves by Ireland, Norway, Spain, and Slovenia to recognize Palestinian statehood, the Israeli government has responded angrily, reflecting the deep divisions and challenges that persist in the region.
The conflict intensified dramatically following Hamas’s attack on southern Israel on October 7, resulting in significant casualties on both sides. According to reports, the retaliatory actions by Israel have led to the deaths of over 43,000 Palestinians, predominantly civilians, which has drawn international scrutiny and calls for renewed diplomatic efforts.
