RAWALPINDI: Imran Khan, the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and a former Prime Minister, is reportedly enduring significant mental distress while imprisoned in Adiala Jail, according to his sister, Aleema Khan. Speaking to the media outside the jail alongside Khan’s lawyer, Salman Akram Raja, Aleema expressed deep concerns over her brother’s well-being, emphasizing that while there is no evidence of physical torture, the psychological pressure he is facing is palpable.
Aleema Khan mentioned that a medical examination by Dr. Asim indicated that Khan is stable but has visibly lost body mass, a sign of the stress he is under. Her comments come amid allegations of broader abuses of power by authorities, where she highlighted the plight of individuals like Intezar Panjutha, suggesting that those in positions of authority are imposing suffering on innocent people. She criticized the legal system, pointing out instances where investigation officers are allegedly instructed to provide false testimonies without fear of retribution.
Her remarks underline a growing sense of injustice that she believes could affect anyone, noting that protests in one country may have repercussions for families back in Pakistan. In a broader call for justice, Aleema referred to her brother’s political movement as a “Revolution for Justice,” urging citizens to remain vigilant against the increasing lawlessness. She warned the new Chief Justice that failing to address these issues could incite the public to take matters into their own hands, further escalating tensions.
She asserted that Imran Khan’s life is in danger and reaffirmed his commitment to democracy and the rule of law, indicating that he has no intention of negotiating a deal for his release. Salman Akram Raja echoed Aleema’s sentiments, calling for national unity in the face of what he described as the erosion of privacy and legal protections. He announced plans for nationwide protests starting in Swabi on May 9, aimed at securing Imran Khan’s freedom and restoring justice. The lawyers and family members of Khan are mobilizing support, emphasizing the importance of constitutional rights and peaceful demonstrations as mechanisms for change in the current political landscape.
