TEL AVIV: Israeli attacks on Lebanon over the past day have resulted in at least 40 fatalities, including several children, according to Lebanese authorities. The violence, which saw heavy bombardment of the southern suburbs of Beirut overnight, intensified the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. The Lebanese health ministry reported that at least seven people were killed in the coastal city of Tyre late on Friday, with two children among the victims.
Rescue operations have been underway, with authorities recovering body parts that will undergo DNA testing for identification. Further strikes on Saturday targeted nearby towns, killing 13 individuals, including seven medics affiliated with Hezbollah and its ally, Amal. The Israeli military said the airstrikes were aimed at Hezbollah infrastructure, including fighters, operational apartments, and weapons stores in the Tyre and Baalbek regions. In addition, at least 20 people were killed in Baalbek, situated in Lebanon’s eastern plains, during Israeli bombings.
The ongoing violence has contributed to a significant death toll in Lebanon, with the health ministry reporting at least 3,136 deaths and nearly 14,000 injuries since the beginning of the conflict. The fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, which began in October 2023, has intensified in recent months, particularly since late September. Israeli bombings have become more frequent and extensive, while Hezbollah has responded with daily rocket and drone attacks.
The group, backed by Iran, claimed responsibility for more than 20 operations on Saturday alone, including a military strike on a factory south of Tel Aviv. In the southern suburbs of Beirut, once a vibrant area and a stronghold of Hezbollah, Israeli airstrikes have caused significant destruction. Many buildings have been reduced to rubble, with Hezbollah’s yellow flags still visible amidst the devastation.
Some buildings were partially damaged, leading to collapsed floors and debris spilling onto cars parked below. In the aftermath, residents like Hassan Hannawi were seen sifting through the wreckage, salvaging personal belongings to survive in the aftermath of the attacks. The situation remains dire, with the violence showing no signs of abating as the conflict continues to escalate between Israel and Hezbollah.
