KARACHI: The National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) has reported three new cases of poliovirus in Pakistan, raising the total number of confirmed cases in 2024 to 59. The latest infections have been identified in Karachi’s Kemari district, Dera Ismail Khan, and Kashmore. Alarmingly, Karachi’s Kemari district has already seen three cases this year, contributing to the growing concern surrounding the resurgence of polio in the country. This is particularly worrisome as Kemari, a densely populated area, has become a focal point for the spread of the virus.
As highlighted by Daily Metro Morning, the polio crisis in Sindh has become increasingly severe, exacerbated by issues surrounding the efficacy of foreign aid-driven vaccination programs. Despite the substantial financial support from international organizations, local institutions have faced criticism for their lack of transparency and accountability in handling the funds. Critics have pointed to the absence of robust oversight mechanisms, which have allowed funds to be mismanaged and led to ineffective execution of vaccination campaigns, especially in high-risk areas like Sindh. This mismanagement has sparked concerns among health experts, who warn that the lack of proper monitoring and accountability is undermining efforts to eradicate the virus.
According to NEOC, the case in Kashmore marks the first from the region this year, while Dera Ismail Khan has recorded eight cases so far. In total, Balochistan has reported 26 cases, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 16, and smaller numbers have been reported in Sindh and Punjab. The surge in cases, particularly in areas like Sindh, has fueled mounting calls for a re-evaluation of the existing vaccination strategies. Health experts argue that the focus should shift from merely providing funds to ensuring that these funds are used effectively through rigorous oversight and improved management.
With the polio virus making a resurgence in various parts of the country, there is growing urgency to address these systemic issues in the vaccination efforts. Public health advocates have called for a comprehensive overhaul of the strategies employed in high-risk regions, stressing that without addressing these underlying problems, the goal of a polio-free Pakistan will remain out of reach. As the country struggles to combat this growing crisis, the need for accountability and transparency in foreign aid and local health initiatives has never been more critical.
