ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Vice President and Senator Sherry Rehman has tabled a resolution in the Senate to mark International Women’s Day, calling for greater economic empowerment and protection of women’s rights across the country.
The resolution urges measures to strengthen women financially by providing them with business opportunities and calls for a ban on child marriages. It also demands swift resolution of cases involving violence against women, timely justice for female political prisoners, and stricter measures to prevent harassment in workplaces and public spaces.
Rehman’s resolution further highlights the need for greater inclusion of women in sports and education, emphasizing that equal opportunities must be provided across all sectors. She stressed that women in Pakistan continue to face systemic oppression despite their crucial role in supporting households.
During the session, Rehman cited a grim statistic, stating, “I have been informed that in Pakistan, every two minutes, a woman dies while giving birth.” She reiterated the urgency of addressing women’s issues, ensuring gender equality, and ending violence and discrimination against women.
