ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has spoken optimistically about the future of Pakistan’s relationship with the United States, describing it as entering a new era marked by mutual respect and shared democratic values. Addressing a gathering at the US embassy in Islamabad to celebrate America’s 249th Independence Day, he extended warm congratulations to the US government, embassy staff, and people.
Shahbaz Sharif reflected on the longstanding cooperation between Pakistan and the US, recalling numerous American development projects that have contributed to Pakistan’s progress over the decades. He highlighted Pakistan’s critical role in the global war on terror after the 9/11 attacks, noting that by 2018 the country had largely eradicated terrorism within its borders.
The prime minister paid tribute to the immense sacrifices Pakistan made during this struggle, including the loss of over 90,000 lives and economic damages exceeding $15 billion, emphasizing that Pakistan’s contribution to counter-terrorism efforts remains unmatched. Turning to recent regional tensions, he addressed the fallout from the Pahalgam attack, calling for an impartial international investigation while condemning India’s subsequent military response, which he said targeted innocent civilians, including women and children.
Shahbaz Sharif recalled how Pakistan defended itself by downing six Indian jets, a move he portrayed as a firm yet measured response. He dismissed the Pahalgam incident as a false flag operation designed to escalate conflict, stressing that Pakistan has maintained restraint despite provocation and remains committed to peace and stability in South Asia.
In a nod to former US President Donald Trump, Shahbaz Sharif praised his efforts to ease tensions between Pakistan and India, as well as his support for fostering economic cooperation in the region. He expressed gratitude towards all friendly nations that contributed to de-escalating recent conflicts and highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance bilateral trade with the US, including progress on resolving tariff-related issues.
Concluding his address, the prime minister expressed hope that this renewed spirit of cooperation would pave the way for greater stability, economic growth, and shared prosperity between Pakistan and the United States. His remarks come at a time when both countries seek to rebuild trust and engage more closely amid complex geopolitical challenges.
