NEW DEHLI: Senior Congress leader Poonam Khera has launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, accusing it of weak diplomacy and failure in managing both domestic and foreign affairs. Her comments come amid renewed criticism from opposition parties, who have been intensifying their scrutiny of the Modi administration’s global posturing.
Speaking at a press event, Khera drew a sharp analogy, claiming that after 11 years of carefully crafting what the ruling party hoped would be a heroic narrative — which she sarcastically referred to as “Alexander of Destiny” — the end result has turned out to be more of a disappointment. “The name is Narendra, but the work is surrender,” she quipped, adding that the government has failed to match its rhetorical bravado with meaningful diplomatic success.
Khera specifically referred to repeated assertions made by former US President Donald Trump, who on more than one occasion claimed credit for brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan during periods of heightened tension. Despite the magnitude of such claims, Modi has remained conspicuously silent, prompting questions about India’s transparency and leadership in regional conflict resolution. In a further swipe at the government’s diplomatic record, the Congress party released a pointed cartoon on social media.
The caricature features a mock phone conversation between Modi and Trump, with Trump cheerfully referencing a ceasefire he helped negotiate — an image meant to underscore what the opposition sees as Modi’s passive acceptance of external intervention in India’s affairs. Khera’s remarks tap into a broader sense of unease among the opposition ranks, who argue that the government’s approach to foreign relations has become increasingly superficial, driven more by optics than strategic substance.
