SOUTH WAZIRSTAN: The District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) in Wana, Lower South Waziristan, continues to operate without an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), putting the lives of critically ill patients at serious risk.
Without this essential facility, emergency cases are routinely referred to hospitals in Dera Ismail Khan, Peshawar, and Multan. These long journeys often prove fatal. Hospitals in those cities frequently have no available beds, leading to the tragic loss of lives.
In a statement to Metro Morning, social activist Adnan Wazir expressed deep concern over the situation. He said the lack of an ICU in a remote and mountainous area like Wana has become a long-standing problem. Poor road conditions, long distances, high costs of private care, and limited resources leave patients without timely medical attention. For low-income families, seeking treatment in major cities is nearly impossible.
Adnan Wazir highlighted that DHQ Wana is the main government healthcare facility for hundreds of thousands of residents in Lower South Waziristan. Despite being managed for years by an NGO under a public-private partnership, the hospital still lacks basic life-saving facilities. The daily referral of critically ill patients to distant cities, he said, reflects the failure of the healthcare system.
He called on the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial government, the Health Department, the Chief Minister, and elected representatives to act immediately. He demanded the urgent establishment of a modern 20-bed ICU with ventilators, essential medical equipment, and trained staff.
“This is not a political issue; it is a matter of human lives,” he stressed. “Any further delay is unacceptable. The people of Lower South Waziristan are waiting for practical measures, and their patience has reached its limit.”
