Mahmood Khan Achakzai emphasizes that even if ten or twenty individuals have been killed, using their deaths as a justification for attacking Parliament is unacceptable
ISLAMABAD: Mahmood Khan Achakzai, Chairman of the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PMAP), has strongly condemned the use of deaths as a pretext for attacking Parliament, in light of the recent arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers from the National Assembly premises.
Achakzai’s remarks came in response to the arrest of PTI lawmakers, including Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Member of National Assembly (MNA) Sher Afzal Marwat, which occurred early Monday morning following a National Assembly session. The arrests were made due to violations during PTI’s rally in Islamabad on Sunday, which included deviations from the agreed route, breaching commitments, attacking Islamabad police, exceeding permitted timings, and delivering anti-state speeches.
In a statement, Achakzai emphasized that even if ten or twenty individuals had been killed, using their deaths as a justification for attacking Parliament was unacceptable. He criticized the recent actions of security forces, asserting that verbal provocations or inflammatory remarks should not serve as a rationale for assaulting Parliament. He condemned the remarks made by Ali Amin Gandapur and stressed that provocative comments, regardless of their nature, do not justify an attack on the legislative institution.
Achakzai reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the Constitution and protecting the sanctity of Parliament, advocating for respect towards all institutions within its framework. Minister Khawaja Asif also condemned the attack on Parliament, stating that such desecration affects everyone and should not be justified under any circumstances. Asif criticized the presence of police and masked individuals in Parliament, calling it a collective dishonor. He urged that those demanding accountability must themselves be above reproach, highlighting the need for a balanced approach in addressing the issues at hand.
The arrests of PTI leaders have sparked calls for a thorough investigation into the actions of the masked figures involved and the circumstances surrounding the arrests. Express News reported a heavy police presence outside the Parliament House in anticipation of the arrests, with police taking swift action as PTI leaders exited the building. The debate continues as lawmakers and political leaders call for clarity and accountability regarding the recent incidents and the broader implications for parliamentary conduct and governance.
