KARACHI: In a decisive move, Afaq Ahmed, Chairman of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement (Haqiqi), has declared his unwavering support for the nationwide strike called by traders. He has strongly urged the public to stay home and fully participate in the protest, ensuring the strike’s success as a powerful statement against the government’s economic policies.
According to an official statement from the party, Afaq Ahmed’s decision to back the strike was made after thorough consultations with the Central Committee of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement. The strike has been initiated by traders in response to the recent surge in electricity bills and the imposition of new taxes on businesses—a burden that disproportionately affects the middle and lower-income segments of society while the elite continue to benefit from privileges.
In his statement, Afaq Ahmed condemned the government’s actions, asserting that these economic measures are eroding the country’s financial stability and are a blatant disregard for the struggles faced by ordinary citizens. He criticized the current administration for its failure to address the economic challenges facing the nation, particularly the widening gap between the wealthy and the poor.
Afaq Ahmed called upon the public to show their support by staying home and closing their businesses as a form of protest. He stressed that this collective action is necessary to send a clear message to the authorities that the people will not tolerate further economic oppression and injustice. “The strike is not just about opposing the hike in electricity bills and taxes; it is about standing up against a system that favors the few at the expense of the many,” he declared.
He further emphasized that the strike is a pivotal moment for the nation to unite against unfair economic policies. Afaq Ahmed encouraged all citizens, regardless of their political affiliations, to join in the protest to demonstrate solidarity with the traders and to advocate for broader economic justice. “This strike is a crucial step in voicing our collective frustration and demanding change. We must stand together to ensure that our voices are heard and that the government understands the urgency of our demands,” he stated.
