DHAKA/KARACHI: Direct air connectivity between Pakistan and Bangladesh was restored on Thursday after a gap of 14 years, as the first flight of Bangladesh’s national carrier landed at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport.
The Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight arrived in Karachi from Dhaka and was given a traditional water salute on landing, marking the resumption of direct flights between the two countries after more than a decade.
Sindh governor Kamran Tessori, Bangladesh’s high commissioner Iqbal Hussain and deputy high commissioner Saqib were present at the airport to receive the flight. The governor welcomed the passengers arriving from Dhaka and joined officials in cutting a celebratory cake to mark the occasion.
Officials said special arrangements had been made at Karachi airport to receive the inaugural flight, reflecting the significance of the restored air link. The direct journey between Dhaka and Karachi took approximately three hours. The resumption of flights is being seen as a positive step towards improving people-to-people contact and strengthening bilateral ties between Pakistan and Bangladesh.
In the initial phase, the airline will operate two flights a week between Dhaka and Karachi, scheduled for Thursdays and Saturdays. The reopening of direct air routes after 14 years is expected to facilitate travel, trade and cultural exchanges between the two South Asian nations.
