ISLAMABAD: Sardar Akhtar Mengal, a prominent politician and leader of the Balochistan National Party (BNP), announced his resignation from the National Assembly on Tuesday, expressing frustration over the lack of attention given to Balochistan’s pressing issues. Mengal made the announcement during a press briefing at the Parliament, alongside Mehmood Khan Achakzai. He revealed his decision to resign was motivated by his disillusionment with the prevailing apathy towards Balochistan’s problems.
“I had decided today to speak in the Assembly about Balochistan’s problems, but there is no interest in Balochistan’s matters,” Mengal stated. He voiced grave concerns about the situation in Balochistan, remarking, “Parliamentarians themselves said that Balochistan is slipping from our hands.” He added, “I say Balochistan has not just slipped; it’s already gone. Many lives have been lost in Balochistan. Everyone should have come together on this issue.” Mengal criticized the lack of meaningful dialogue on the matter, calling for a dedicated meeting to address these critical concerns.
Mengal also condemned the suppression of discussions related to Balochistan, stating, “Whenever this issue is brought up, it’s blacked out. If you disagree with what I say, listen patiently. If you still find my words wrong, I accept any punishment.” He further declared, “Even if you want to encounter or kill me outside Parliament, go ahead, but at least listen. We have no one, and no one listens to us.” Mengal’s resignation underscores the deep-seated dissatisfaction among some Balochistan leaders with the national government’s handling of issues affecting their region. His departure from the National Assembly reflects growing frustration with the perceived neglect of Balochistan’s challenges on the national stage.
