KARACHI: An internal inquiry has been launched into allegations of misconduct involving the Station House Officer (SHO) and staff at the Women’s Police Station in Karachi, after a woman from Liaquatabad publicly accused them of abuse. The investigation, confirmed by police officials, follows a video statement released by the woman, in which she accuses both the police and an individual named Basit of physical assault and mistreatment.
According to police sources, the situation reportedly originated from a financial dispute between the woman and Basit. In her statement, she alleges that Basit, accompanied by accomplices, forcibly removed her from her home, tearing her clothes in the process. The abuse, she claims, continued at the Liaquatabad Women’s Police Station, where she and her daughter were subjected to further assault by Basit and his associates, reportedly under the watch of police officers.
The woman’s allegations have cast a critical light on police conduct and the challenges faced by victims—particularly women—in seeking justice within the system. The case has raised pressing concerns over the alleged involvement of law enforcement in perpetuating abuse rather than preventing it, leading to public calls for accountability and reforms to protect victims within police precincts.
The incident has intensified scrutiny on how cases involving female victims are handled, with civil society groups and public figures urging transparency and reform. As the internal inquiry progresses, the investigation is expected to address not only the allegations but also broader issues regarding the treatment of women within the police system. Senior officials have stressed the importance of a thorough, impartial investigation, pledging to take necessary actions to safeguard victims’ rights and prevent future abuses in police custody.
