ISLAMABAD: Amna Baloch, bringing over 30 years of diplomatic experience, officially assumed her role as Pakistan’s 33rd Foreign Secretary on Wednesday, succeeding Ambassador Syrus Sajjad Qazi, who retired after reaching superannuation.
A formal farewell dinner was held on Tuesday night in honor of Ambassador Syrus at the Foreign Ministry, recognizing his professionalism and contributions. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar praised the outgoing Foreign Secretary for his skillful handling of global diplomatic challenges with strategic insight.
In his farewell speech, Syrus Sajjad Qazi expressed deep gratitude to his mentors, colleagues, and dedicated teams, including ambassadors and the staff at the Foreign Secretary’s Office, for their support throughout his career. He also acknowledged the guidance of the Foreign Ministers under whom he served.
Amna Baloch steps into her new position at a time of considerable global challenges. Her extensive diplomatic career includes key roles such as Consul General in Chengdu, China (2014-2017), High Commissioner to Malaysia (2019-2023), and Ambassador to the European Union, Belgium, and Luxembourg (2023-2024).
Amna’s appointment is particularly significant, as she becomes the second female Foreign Secretary of Pakistan, and the first from Sindh in many years. The first female to hold this prestigious position was Tehmina Janjua, appointed by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in 2017.
With a Master’s degree in History, Amna Baloch joined the Foreign Service in 1991, serving in various capacities, including as Joint Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office and Additional Secretary in the Foreign Ministry. She is noted for her work in science diplomacy and strengthening educational ties between Pakistan and Europe.
Her tenure, which is expected to last until September 2026, is anticipated to bring stability and continued leadership to Pakistan’s foreign affairs.
