The court, after reviewing the evidence and hearing arguments, rejected the remand request for Shoaib Shaheen and placed him in judicial custody

ISLAMABAD: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Tuesday approved an eight-day physical remand for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders Sher Afzal Marwat, Aamir Dogar, Zain Qureshi, Naseem Shah, Ahmed Chattha, and several others in connection with the Sangjani police station case. However, the court rejected the police’s request for physical remand of Advocate Shoaib Shaheen and instead ordered his transfer to judicial custody. The arrests of these PTI leaders, including Sher Afzal Marwat and other Members of the National Assembly (MNAs), occurred outside Parliament House following a session of the National Assembly.
A heavy police presence had assembled outside the building in anticipation of PTI leaders exiting. The leaders were detained over alleged violations during PTI’s rally in Islamabad on Sunday. These violations include straying from the agreed-upon route, breaching commitments with authorities, attacking police personnel, exceeding permitted timings, and delivering speeches deemed anti-state. Islamabad police presented Shoaib Shaheen and the other arrested individuals before ATC Judge Abul Hasnaat Zulqarnain. Prosecutor Raja Naveed argued for a 15-day physical remand for the accused, alleging that they had used police equipment during the rally’s violent clashes.
The prosecutor further stated that police kits had yet to be recovered, though Shaheen was not directly involved in this aspect. Naveed maintained that Shaheen’s involvement warranted his remand as he had allegedly instructed others during the incident. However, Shaheen’s legal team opposed this, arguing for his discharge from the case. The court, after reviewing the evidence and hearing arguments, rejected the remand request for Shoaib Shaheen and placed him in judicial custody. It also scheduled arguments for his post-arrest bail application for the following day. Meanwhile, the court granted the police’s request for an eight-day physical remand for the MNAs and three other individuals.
During the hearing, Sher Afzal Marwat questioned the legitimacy of the case, pointing out that Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, the PTI Chairman, had already been discharged on similar evidence. Marwat also challenged the police’s accusations, denying claims that he was in possession of a Kalashnikov and asserting that he only had a pistol. The case stems from incidents that occurred during the PTI rally in Sangjani, Islamabad, on Sunday, which reportedly escalated into confrontations with law enforcement. Around 60 to 70 individuals were arrested in connection with these events, according to police officials.
