SUKKUR: A significant rally followed by a sit-in was organized by the Awami Tehreek in Larkana on Saturday, protesting the planned amendment to the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) Act. The protesters gathered in large numbers, raising concerns about the potential impacts of the amendment, which they condemned as a direct threat to Sindh’s water resources and a violation of federal principles.
The demonstration, led by Advocate Sajid Hussain Mahessar, Central Secretary of the Organizing Committee of Awami Tehreek, saw participation from various activists, including women and children. He voiced strong opposition to the amendment, stating that it undermines the interests of Sindh by diverting its water resources towards corporate farming initiatives. Noor Ahmed Katiar, leader of the Awami Tehreek, echoed similar sentiments, describing the proposed amendment as a “black law” designed to deprive Sindh of its rightful share of water.
“The people of Sindh will not accept this legislation, which poses a grave danger to our province,” Katiar stated, calling for unified resistance. Mahnoor Mallah, Central Leader of Sindhyani Tahreek, warned that the amendment is even more perilous than the One Unit system of the past. She emphasized that Sindh will not tolerate such a move under any circumstances, urging people to resist this assault on the province’s existence.
Among the leading voices at the rally were Zulfiqar Mirani, Muhammad Khan Chandio, Qadir Bhutto, Mahboob Rak Rahojo, Atif Mallah, Haji Ali Hasan Wako, Sarwar Narejo, Ayaz Jamal Chandio, Tufail Jakro, and Advocate Kamran Lako, all of whom denounced the amendment as an existential threat to Sindh. Criticism was also directed at the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and former President Asif Ali Zardari, with the leaders accusing them of supporting the amendment.
